The American Red Wolf Research and Conservation Center

Welcome to the Red Wolf Renaissance Fair!

Red Wolf Renaissance Fair is creating a day of merriment in recognition of the purposed American Red Wolf Conservation and Research Center at Craighead Forest Park. The 5-million-dollar center would serve as an ecotourism center, provide secure enclosures for 12 or more Red Wolves, and make Jonesboro a part of helping to secure the Red Wolf's future.

Red Wolf History & Conservation

The American Red Wolf was once native to the entire Southeastern United States. However, by 1980, persecution and habitat loss had driven the species to extinction in the wild.

A groundbreaking conservation effort began with a small group of 14 wild-caught wolves that became the foundation for today's captive breeding program. In 1987, the first captive-bred wolves were reintroduced to the wild in North Carolina, marking a new chapter in their survival.

The Promise of Red Wolf Recovery: Defenders of Wildlife

America's Wolf Today

With the wild Red Wolf population found only along the coast of North Carolina the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates there are only 28 to 31 red wolves in the wild as of August 2025.

Approximately 280 Red Wolves are managed in captive breeding programs as part of the Red Wolf SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) program.
